Smoky quartz is a quartz variety with a light to dark brown color which gives a ‘smoky’ appearance. Sometimes it has a more light brown color to sometimes black. When it is naturally black it’s often referred to as ‘morion smoky quartz’. Smoky quartz sometimes gets radiated by people because the dark color is very hard to find. 

When heated, smoky quartz can turn into citrine.  Always check whether you are buying a natural or processed piece. Smoky quartz does not break easily and is therefore a popular stone for jewelry and amulets. Smoky quartz is found in Russia, Brazil, India, Bolivia, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Namibia.
