Smoky quartz is a quartz varyt with a light to dark brown color which gives a ‘smoky’ appearance. Sometimes it has a more yellow color to sometimes almost black. The color is mainly caused by radiation in combination with aluminium. Smoky quartz is sometimes extra radiated by people because some prefer a very dark color. When heated, smoky quartz can turn into citrine. Always check carefully whether you are buying a natural or processed piece. Smoky quartz does not break easily and is therefore a popular stone for jewelry and amulets.
