Origin and history.
Amethyst is the trade name for the purple variety of quartz. In recent years the name amethyst is also used for other kinds of quartz like green, red or pink. The beautiful purple color is created by iron in combination with ionizing radiation. Amethyst can be lavender to deep purple in color. Amethyst used to be very popular with the Egyptians and Romans, and it still is today. It is the most popular and best sold mineral in the world. Depending on the quality, the prices can be reasonable to very expensive. Amethyst is found in many places, but the most beautiful pieces have come from Brazil for years. In the Middle Ages it was believed that Amethyst could help against drunkenness. That is why the bishops drank their wine from an amethyst cup.
