Origin and history.
Amethyst is the trade name for the purple varity of quartz. In the last years the name amethyst is also used for other kinds of quartz like green, red or pink. The beautiful purple color is created by iron in combination with ionizing radiation. Amethyst can be lavender to deep purple in color.  Amethyst used to be very popular with the Egyptians and Romans, and it still is today. It is the most popular and best sold mineral in the world.
